The problem

Why You Need A Sourcing Agent for 1688?

1688 is Alibaba Group’s domestic wholesale platform, built for buyers inside China.

Language barriers

Listings, specs and supplier chat are all in Chinese. Translation tools handle the title and drop the spec lines where MOQ, material grade and packaging actually sit.

International payment issues

Suppliers take Alipay or a domestic RMB transfer. Both normally need a Chinese ID or business registration to open.

Limited after-sales support

Wrong item, short count or a defect is handled in Chinese, on domestic terms, with no return address outside China.

Consolidation and shipping

Every supplier ships to a domestic address only. Ten suppliers means ten parcels that someone in China has to receive, check and combine before anything can leave.

Negotiating quantity and price with a 1688 supplier alongside their factory profile

1688 buying service

We place the order, hold the supplier to the agreed spec and quantity, and chase the ones that go quiet after payment.

Processing supplier payments in RMB for an overseas 1688 order

1688 payment agent

You pay us by T/T, Payoneer or PayPal. We pay the supplier in RMB. No Alipay account and no Chinese bank account at any point.

Inspecting 1688 goods unit by unit against the order checklist

Quality control

We check every unit that reaches our warehouse rather than pulling a sample. When something is wrong we take it back to the supplier and get it fixed, instead of sending you a report and waiting.

Repacking parcels from multiple 1688 suppliers into one export carton

Consolidation & export

Parcels from every supplier land at one warehouse, get counted, repacked into export cartons and leave as a single shipment by sea, air, rail or courier.

Blank gift boxes and swing tags used for private-label packaging samples

Product customization

Logo printing, custom packaging and private-label work, coordinated with factories that have done it before rather than with a seller willing to try.

Pricing

How We Charge?

If you need us to find suppliers and manage the full sourcing process, there is no separate service fee. All costs are included in our quoted unit price. Our quotes are free, and you are welcome to compare the total sourcing cost with others.

If you already have suppliers and only need help with order follow-up, QC, consolidation and shipping, we charge 5% of the product value (min. $100).

Domestic shipping to our Yiwu warehouse and international shipping to your country are charged separately.

Transparency

What Your Quote Is Made Of

A 1688 order is not one price. It is these lines. The first five are handled and quoted by us; the last two are pass-through costs we can only estimate.

Process

How We Work as Your 1688 Purchasing Agent

Six steps. Each one lists what you get back.

You send the links

Paste 1688 URLs into a sheet with the quantity for each, or send photos and specs if you have not found the product yet.

You get back: what we can and cannot source, and a flag on anything likely to be a compliance or shipping problem.

We verify and quote

We confirm real price, real MOQ and real stock with each seller, because listed prices are entry prices.

You get back: an itemised quote — goods, domestic freight, consolidation, international freight.

You pay, we pay them

Usually 30% deposit to start and the balance before shipping. T/T, Payoneer or PayPal to us; RMB to the suppliers.

You get back: confirmation that every supplier order is placed.

Goods arrive at our warehouse

Every supplier ships to us. We count against your order and inspect each unit.

You get back: photos of what actually arrived, plus a written note on any shortage or defect before anything ships.

We fix what is wrong

Shortages and defects go back to the supplier for replacement or refund.

You get back: a decision to make — replace, refund, or ship as-is with a discount — rather than a surprise at your end.

Consolidation and shipping

Everything is repacked into export cartons and leaves as one shipment by sea, air, rail or courier. Already use a forwarder in China? We deliver to them instead.

You get back: final CBM and weight before you commit to a freight quote.

What we flag for you

Domestic Spec Is Not Export Spec

1688 listings are written for the Chinese domestic market. Nothing on the listing tells you what is missing for export — so we check it at quoting stage, before you have paid for anything.

Who we help

Who Uses a 1688 Sourcing Agent in China

A dozen different products in small quantities grouped for one buyer

Mixed small orders, many suppliers

Twelve products from eleven sellers, in quantities none of them consider interesting. The work is in the consolidation, not the negotiation.

Identical cartons stacked on warehouse racking for repeat stock orders

Retailers and wholesalers buying to stock

You buy the same lines repeatedly and want a buying office in China rather than a series of one-off transactions — someone who remembers which supplier failed last time.

Poly-bagging and labelling products for e-commerce order fulfilment

E-commerce sellers and brands

Amazon, Shopify and DTC sellers who need units that survive a returns rate: consistent spec between batches, packaging that arrives intact, and a compliance problem caught before it becomes a listing suspension.

1688 Sourcing Agent: Things You Need to Know

What is a 1688 sourcing agent and their role?

A 1688 sourcing agent is a China-based buying partner that purchases from 1688.com on behalf of an overseas buyer. 1688 is Alibaba Group’s domestic wholesale platform: its sellers quote in RMB, accept only Chinese payment methods, and ship to Chinese addresses. The agent exists to close that gap, and acts as the buyer’s operating presence inside China rather than as a broker who forwards messages.

In practice the role covers four things: working out which seller is the actual factory, paying the supplier in RMB, receiving and checking the goods at a domestic address, and turning several domestic parcels into one export shipment. The same role is described in different words across the market — 1688 buying agent, purchasing agent, procurement partner, sourcing company — but the work behind those labels is the same.

What services does a 1688 sourcing agent typically provide?

Most 1688 sourcing agents provide the same core services and differ mainly in how much of each they do in-house.

Core services: supplier identification and price verification; order placement and follow-up; payment to the supplier in RMB; receiving and counting goods at a warehouse in China; consolidating several suppliers into one shipment; and export documentation.

Commonly offered as add-ons: inspection beyond a count check, product photography, repackaging and labelling for e-commerce, private-label and custom packaging, sample collection, and warehousing between orders.

Two things are worth checking rather than assuming. Whether the agent has its own warehouse or rents space, because that decides how fast a problem gets resolved. And whether inspection sits inside the quoted price or is billed separately — the same word covers a count check and a full functional inspection, and they are not the same service.

Compare pricing models for 1688 sourcing solutions

Agents charge in three ways, and two quotes are only comparable once you know which pricing model each one uses.

Markup inside the quoted price. There is no separate fee line; the agent’s markup sits inside the unit price you are given, and you compare one landed total against another. This suits buyers who need the supplier found for them and care about the final number rather than the breakdown.

Commission on order value. A percentage of goods value, usually stepping down as the order grows — commonly around 10% at the low end and 5% on larger orders, often with a minimum charge. This suits buyers who already have the supplier and are paying for execution.

Flat fee or per-SKU fee. A fixed charge per order or per SKU, sometimes on top of a commission. This suits buyers mixing many SKUs in small quantities, where a percentage of a small goods value would not cover the handling work.

Whichever model applies, the same three questions decide your real cost: what is included in the quote, what is billed separately, and whether domestic freight, consolidation and inspection sit inside or outside that number. HiSourcing uses the first model when we source for you, and the second — 5% of goods value, minimum $100 — when you already have the supplier.

How do 1688 sourcing agents handle quality control for imported goods?

Quality control on a 1688 order happens in three separate layers, and “we check everything” can mean any one of them.

A count check confirms that what arrived matches what was ordered — quantity, variant, colour. Every reputable agent does this, and on its own it is not really inspection.

A visual and functional check looks at each unit for visible defects, packaging condition and whether moving parts work. This is where agents differ most, because it is the layer that costs labour.

A third-party inspection brings in an external firm to sample against an AQL standard and issue a report. Buyers of imported goods usually commission this on bulk orders, or where their own retail customer requires it.

None of these is laboratory testing. Finding no visible defect does not mean a product meets a destination-market standard — CE, FCC, CPSIA or UKCA evidence is separate work with a separate cost. HiSourcing checks every unit that reaches our warehouse rather than sampling a carton, and takes problems back to the supplier instead of forwarding you a report. We do not promise a zero-defect shipment, because nobody inspecting by hand can.

How to find reputable 1688 sourcing companies?

Vetting a 1688 sourcing company is mostly a matter of asking questions whose answers can be checked later.

How do you charge, and what falls outside the quote? An agent who cannot name their pricing model, or who answers only that their rates are competitive, will be equally vague when costs appear mid-order.

What does your inspection cover, and what does it not? A specific answer is a good sign. A promise of zero defects is a red flag — no hand inspection can guarantee that, and the claim tells you how to read the rest of the answers.

Who handles my account? A named person who stays with the order behaves differently from a shared inbox.

What happens when goods are wrong? Replacement, refund, who pays return freight — settle this before you pay, not after.

Will you ever tell me not to buy? An agent who can name the situations where 1688 is the wrong platform is describing real experience rather than a sales script.

For US buyers, add two more: who handles the customs paperwork, and has the agent shipped your product category to the United States before. Category experience is the part of due diligence most often skipped.

Steps to work with a 1688 agent for product acquisition

The path from first enquiry to goods leaving China is usually five stages, and knowing the timeline prevents most of the friction.

1. Brief. Send 1688 links, or photos and specs if you have not found the product yet. State quantity and destination country — both change the answer.

2. Verification and quote. The agent confirms real price, real MOQ and real stock with each seller, because listed prices are entry prices. Expect an itemised quote rather than a single number.

3. Payment. Terms vary. A 30% deposit with the balance before shipping is common, and some agents ask for payment in full on smaller orders.

4. Picking or production, then inspection. Stock items move within days. Customised or made-to-order goods carry a manufacturing lead time, commonly 15–30 days depending on the product and the season.

5. Consolidation and export. Parcels from every supplier are combined, repacked into export cartons and shipped.

For product acquisition on a deadline, the two variables that move the date most are customisation and Chinese public holidays — Chinese New Year in particular stops production for two to three weeks, and the queue afterwards is long.

FAQ

1688 Agent FAQ

None as a separate line when we source for you — our margin sits inside the quoted unit price. 5% of goods value with a $100 minimum when you already have the supplier and need execution only.

Consolidation and repacking are included in the quote. Domestic freight into our warehouse and international freight out of it are separate lines, always shown.

We invoice in USD and accept T/T, Payoneer and PayPal, credit card included. We pay the suppliers in RMB, so you need no Alipay account and no Chinese bank account.

Technically yes, if you can read the listings, hold a Chinese payment account, and have someone in China to receive and consolidate the parcels. If you have all three, you do not need us. Most overseas buyers are missing the second and third.

Yes. A clear photo with dimensions and material is usually enough to identify the product or something close to it. Send the reference and your target price together — the second one narrows the search more than the first.

We collect samples from several sellers at once and ship them together, so you compare real options rather than committing to the first workable one.

Mixed, like any wholesale platform. Listing photos are usually the manufacturer’s and shared across many sellers, listed prices are entry prices, and a seller registered in one city often ships from a workshop in another province. We verify all three before you pay.

One named person who stays on your account, not a shared inbox and not a ticket number. You will have their direct contact after the first reply.
